An Opening Repertoire for White
Published in Paperback by Collier Books (December, 1984)
Author: Raymond D. Keene
Average review score:

Decent one volume reference for club players rated 1400-1900
This is a repertoire book (I guess that's why the title, huh?) that picks one variation for white in response to each black defence.

The repetoire is based around the Queen's pawn opening (1. d2-d4 followed normally by 2. c2-c4).

The lines featured are typically fairly solid - the authors tend to avoid the highly complex, overly sharp lines that require a lot of memorization.

I have personally had pretty decent results by following the recommendations contained in the book.

The book has an explanation at the beginning of each chapter outlining the ideas behind the opening. This feature alone makes the book valuable, especially for lower rated players who will get nothing out of the typical opening monograph with no words and all symbols.

The books limited size means that a higher rated player, such as 1900+ will definitely have to supplement the book with more specialized materials in order to be prepared for that exalted level of opponent.

There seem to be few (if any) typos in the book and the selection of illustrative games are pretty good.

The only reason I subtracted one star was for the lack of depth in certain chapters.

Playing With Fire (Nancy Drew Files Case #26)
Published in Paperback by Simon Pulse (November, 1989)
Author: Carolyn Keene
Average review score:

"Nancy goes to L.A. to investigate arson..."
With the help of her two friends (Bess Marvin and George Fayne), Nancy Drew is on her way to Los Angeles to investigate "three cases of extortion and arson involving Napoleonic relics"--a mini portrait, a manuscript, and a gown appropriately referred to as the Flame. However, Nancy and her two sidekicks barely leave the airport before their lives are threatened when someone plants a bomb in Nancy's purse--and that's just the beginning.

Despite the cliffhangers at the end of the chapters and the relatively fast pace, "Playing With Fire" wasn't a very suspenseful or interesting book; but I suppose if you're a Nancy Drew fan and history buff, then you might like this 26th case. There are the usual shameful plugs of other cases from The Nancy Drew Files, like the previous one in "Rich and Dangerous" and #13: "Wings of Fear," as well as the customary case overview at the beginning of the book, which is useful since there are so many characters; it's hard to determine who's a suspect and who's not until the last few chapters--but possibly earlier on if you can differentiate between the characters.

It was good but I guessed in the middle only who was the culprit. So,I guess I can't give 5 stars to it.

Showdown in Seville: Kasparov-Kasparov IV
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Publishing Company (March, 1988)
Authors: Raymond Keene and David Goodman
Average review score:

Another Big Chess Show Down
I have the New York Times Book on Fischer/Spassy chess match from 1972. I have seen the style of chess change since 1972. Comparing the styles with Fischer/Spassy and Kasparov/Karpov - man's chess playing style has gotten more powerful. Now the wait for the next 20 or 30 years. We will look back at these games and know that man's playing of chess is still getting stronger.

The Slav for the Tournament Player (Tournament Player's Repertoire of Openings)
Published in Paperback by Batsford (February, 1989)
Authors: Glenn Flear and R.D. Keene
Average review score:

Excellent explanation of system, not just moves!
Glenn Flear has provided the reader with all the information necessary to master the basic Slav. While more recent books are available, GM Flear's book remains topical because he includes complete games with explanations of plans. He does not really discuss the popular ...a6 lines (this was published before a6 was really tested), but his comments will help players who face the main lines from either side. I was especially impressed with his chapter on the Exchange Slav and various anti-Slav variations. This is an excellent example of how to write a good opening book!

The Soccer Shoe Clue
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Carolyn Keene and Anthony Accardo
Average review score:

I think it was a goood book from my school library
I think it was a good book, but when Nancy found clues in all the books that I've read, it was the most interesting. One that I really liked was called the "Sercret at Solaire".I read alot of Nancy Drew books from my school library. But the Soccer Shoe Clue was one of the best.

Published in Mass Market Paperback by Pocket Books (November, 1987)
Author: Carolyn Keene
Average review score:

good
I liked the book but I played the game first so I was surprised. I got it Christmas and finished it the same day. With everything that happens to Rick I couldn't stop. I was on the edge of my seat.
It is about a famous soap star, Rick Arlen. He is recieving death threats and when Nancy and Bess have to investigate Bess goes mad over him. Bad things are happening and if Bess is at his side almost non-stop she is in danger too. Mattie is very upset and Nancy has to hurry before Rick's killer does get him.

Successful Writing, Fifth Edition
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (January, 2003)
Authors: Maxine Hairston and Michael Keene
Average review score:

Ghost Instructor
As a community college instructor, I am able to help my students only one evening a week. Maxine Hairston, on the other hand, helps them as many evenings as they want, and she is available on weekends, on demand, for as long as they keep the book. When she talks with them, she reassures them that writing is not impossible, that they have great things to say, and that following some clear steps will make life much easier. She counsels them on how to get started, how to make their writing both clear and coherent, and how to end. Without Ms. Hairston, our writing lives would be much less satisfying. I highly recommend her assistance.

The Twin Dilemma
I thought this book was pretty good. I liked how the author used the characters and how the story went from the starting to middle and end. I really liked her word choice she used her words pretty well writing the book. And I like Nancy Drew which is the main character in the story I liked what she did in the story all the way through. And I rated this book a four out of five and I advise people to read this book.
